13 by Mattia Tremolada T he opening season of the Formula Regional Championship by Alpine turned out to be a resounding success. After two split seasons between Formula Regional European and Formula Renault Eurocup, with none of the two series really succeeding, the unification between ACI Sport and Alpine, which took over from Renault Sport as the company’s sports brand, finally provided a welcomed boost. The concept, started by the FIA, established itself in Europe with an average grid of 33 cars (36 at Mugello and Monza) and 12 high‐level teams. The grid featured experienced drivers and a quick rookie making for a spectacular year. The calendar reflected the same level of quality with eight tracks out of ten being part of the Formula 1 calendar. The only issue was the lack of passing: with such a similar performance level, and high downforce being compromised by the car in front, the drivers struggled to gain positions. The promoters of the series are already experimenting to provide a solution to the issue for 2022.
