32 by Iacopo Rubino H ugh Chambers has been a leading figure in British motorsport since November 2018. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Motorsport UK, the National Federation. He is the most qualified person to make an assessment about British F4 as the series entered a new era, from the organisation and technical points of view. It was Motorsport UK itself that opted for Tatuus as the chassis maker for its second‐generation cars. The series is now in line with the major European championships, with an increase in car counts that already set the foundations for a solid future. And more good news might be on the way. In 2022 British F4 reached a triple milestone: Motorsport UK took over its management directly, the series entered a new generation, and a new chassis supplier, Tatuus, was selected. How were these transitions addressed? “We have to go back one year, to mid‐2021. The arrival of the next‐ generation Formula 4 cars has been a great opportunity, and we decided to manage it directly to make it even more competitive. We chose to continue supporting the BTCC weekends with a 10‐round schedule. That's the main carryover aspect from the past. Then we launched a tender for a new technical package, and our preference went to Tatuus for the chassis and to Pirelli for the tyres. So far, we have been very satisfied with the package, and the same goes for teams and drivers.” What can you tell us about the relationship between Motorsport UK and Tatuus? “We are really grateful to Tatuus as they put up a massive effort to supply not only our series, but also all the other Formula 4 championships in spite of the world‐scale supply‐chain and logistics issues. All the teams received the cars they had ordered in time, together with enough spare parts. Due to external factors, sometimes we went down to the wire, but we got around the obstacles, and the championship has been running smoothly and consistently. So, credit is due to CEO Giovanni Delfino and the whole Tatuus company.” British F4 will have the same chassis as the Italian, German and Spanish series. Was that a goal when you chose Tatuus, or is it just a positive consequence? “For us it was a major point of interest and that influenced the decision, as it enables drivers to move more easily between different championships, and teams to operate on a common base, favoring interoperability between different series. In the first season with the new‐ generation car, the teams got very focused on British F4 given the many changes to implement, but for the future, they will be much more flexible in defining their programs. For the engines, we adopted a slightly different approach. The engines are the same as the previous generation, The Interview/Hugh Chambers How the future was born Hugh Chambers, Chief Executive Officer at Motorsport UK, helped lead British F4 through its transition to a new era, partnering with Tatuus.
