De Vries back to winning
ways at Spa-Francorchamps
After the Red Bull Ring weekend was over, the Formula
Renault 2.0 ALPS moved to the legendary Spa-
Francorchamps venue. And, Nyck de Vries made a clear
statement that the missed wins in Austria were due to
episodes that can happen in racing. At the Belgian
track, the Koiranen GP driver was irresistible with two
pole positions, two good starts and an almost
uncontested double win. No mistakes, no hiccups, but
only his stunning pure speed that made the job
impossible for his opponents. The others had to fight
for second place. Once again de Vries had his most
dangerous rival in Matevos Isaakyan who scored two
second places. But his close Race 1 gap must not
deceive because it was due to a late caution that
compacted the pack and reduced the delays. The
Russian tried to attack de Vries at the following re-start
but the Dutchman stayed cool and retained his well-
deserved leadership. Nonetheless, Isaakyan drove two
great and consistent races. Charles Leclerc got two
third place finishes and continued to climb his learning
curve. He’s learning a lot at each race and it’s easy to
expect some great results from him, even better than
second and third place. The two podiums in Belgium
replicate the current state of the championship. After
four races, the classification is similar to the one of the
two Spa races: De Vries leads with 76 more than
Isaakyan… more points than available in three races.
More good performances in the Ardennes came for
Luke Chudleigh, who was good but not always equally
consistent, Akash Nandy, Sebastien Morrris, Ben
Barnicoat and Raoul Owens. On the other hand, Dario
Capitanio grabbed a great 6th place in Race 2. The
Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS series will now go back
underway on the 5th and 6th of July at Monza and will
write another important chapter in his history on a
legendary track.
